From Gmail to Fastmail — and suddenly my inbox makes sense

I recently moved from Gmail to Fastmail. Not a revolution — just a deliberate step toward more digital independence.

Fastmail, based in Melbourne ❤️, feels more privacy-conscious. Still Five Eyes, sure — but already a better trade-off than the US default. I would have preferred an EU provider, but everything I tried fell short on experience. Here, the UI is clean, focused — and simply more enjoyable than Gmail.

The real shift wasn’t the provider. It was what I did next: I rebuilt my mailbox and reduced it to 11 labels I actually understand — 9 for content, 2 for status. Most emails are auto-filtered. What needs attention gets Action or Review. Everything else goes to archive — usually obvious, only a few need a manual decision.

My favourite tweak: newsletters snoozed until 8am. One batch, one decision moment. Done.

After a few days, Inbox Zero already works. Let’s see if it sticks — but it feels lighter.

The hardest part wasn’t cleaning up. It was deciding where things belong. Once that clicked, everything else became easy.
