Scrum Certifications as a Shared Language

I’ve had my fair share of discussions about whether certifications for Scrum Master, Product Owner or Scrum Developer are worth it. Frankly, the exams often feel like extended vocabulary tests – time consuming but not that deep. So why might these certifications still be valuable?

In many projects, or rather products, there is often a lack of common understanding of roles, events or artifacts. Roles are mixed up or redefined in a confusing way, leading to a loss of clarity. For example, Scrum Masters or POs are sometimes called Team Captains, Project Leads or Project Managers – just so the organisation doesn’t have to make any real changes. And let’s not forget that certifications are expensive, especially if all team members need to be certified. But despite the cost, these certifications can help ensure that there’s a common foundation of understanding and language, providing a clearer path for collaboration and communication – even with people from outside the organisation.
